Eli-isms!

eli-greeneyes.jpgOne feature I will run in here from time to time will be Eli-isms. He’s my 5 year old, he’s precocious, and he’s saying a ton of things that
a) blow me and the Mom away or
b) make us laugh hard.

Eli-ism: 1-20-07, yesterday morning at breakfast
He is becoming very aware of certain things: like what holidays are and what they are really about. He started a conversation with me yesterday saying:

E: Daddy, do you know who Martin Luther King is?
Me: Yes! That’s great that you know him, Eli. Tell me more.
E: Did you know there are people out there who’s skin is darker than ours, but some people treat them differently. And they use to have different bathrooms for them? And they use to wear chains on their legs?
M: Yes, Eli.

…And we went into a conversation about civil rights.
It’s a great example of why we should continue to have holidays that honor those who represent the depraved, the underpriveledged, and the under represented–it gives us a day to really think about them. Being born in Californian near an agricultural region, I was very excited to hear that Cesar Chavez Day was added to California’s holiday list a number of years ago. That’s what I am talking about.

Which leads me to what he said this morning to Mom:

eli-greeneyes.jpg Insta-Eli-Quote :1-21-07 , this morning
E: What holidays are in February, Mom?
Mom: Well there is Valentine’s day, and President’s day..
E: President’s day? I don’t want to celebrate President’s day.
Mom: Why Eli?
E: I don’t want to celebrate “George Bush”.
LOL–all of us in the house.
Mom then gave some examples of a few presidents in history who are usually assumed as worthy of the mantle of that holiday. I don’t make this stuff up. I can’t.
And we aren’t bashing him, per se, so Eli must just be picking it up somewhere.
